That Time Again...(Part 2)

Carrying on from my post from yesterday.

6.) The Name

Whenever your child is making a picture or doing a worksheet have them print their name at the top of the paper. This quickly teaches them what their name looks like and how to spell it.


7.) Identifying Letters


This is a good worksheet that you can find printable's of by using your search engines. This teaches him how to relate the letter and the sound that letter makes to objects that start with that letter.


Take old bottle caps and write letters on them in sharpie. Then give your child words and see if they can find the right bottle caps to match the letters in the word.


This is another thing that you can find printable's online. Your child will need to colour in the first letter of that object. ex. a for apple, p for pumpkin, h for hay, and c for corn.

8.) Brain Teazers


These are perfect examples of somethings that your child will face in kindergarten. 
1.) Is simple mazes. They are easy to find as free printable's online and kids really love them.
2.) Colour the numbers. This teaches your child to follow directions, since they have to find the 1's colour them one color, 2's another color and so on. Again these are easy to find as free printable's.
3.) Color the same. Your child will have to find the objects (or bugs) that are the same and color them. (each set of bugs should be different colors)
4.) Dot-to-Dot. This helps them with their numbers again.

9.) Patterns


This is one way to teach your child patterns, but there are many. My BooBoo likes to take her fruit snacks and create patterns with the different colors. Make sure to make it clear that patterns are not just colors, but shapes as well.

10.) Where Do They Go?

This is a game that teaches your child how to categorize thing. Like this.


Give your child pictures and have them place them where they go (like the ocean, or not). You can also do this with household objects. You could take stuff from the bathroom and other things from the kitchen and then ask your child which room it goes in.

11.) Numbers




Your child needs to be able to read, write, count and understand different numbers. Again practice sheets can be printed off of the internet for free. This is an excellent one that and fully approve of.

12.) Prepositions

This is a very cute and simple way to teach your child prepositions. Do this with any object and your child will understand in no time.

13.) The Review

This is pretty much what your child's examination sheet to enter kindergarten will look like. As you can see they need to be able to identify colors, shapes, numbers, letters, and prepositions.

That Time Again...

So August is here once more and next year my little BooBoo will be entering kindergarten. In this coming year there is so much that she needs to know just so that she can get into kindergarten. 71 things to be exact.

Now it's all well and good to know the things your child needs to learn, but how do you teach them in a way that they'll truly understand. So I searched the internet and found some fun teaching ideas.

1.) Listening


A least once a day have "quiet time" with your child. This is when you and your child pick a book to read, and your child must sit there quietly for the entire time. The first few times they will probably want to move around, talk, and interrupt, but the more you do it the better your child will get at it. It is very good practice for them learning to sit nicely in class.

2.) Labels


This is an amazing idea that works. Make cute and colorful labels for everything in your home. This is because your child should already know what an object is called, like the toilet, but now they will see it put into words. It will give them a better understanding when in comes to writing those words.

3.) My Little Letter Book


This is something that you can either make yourself, buy at the store (like walmart) or print.

Or there are others that can be found just by using the search engines.

These teach your child, how to write both the upper and lowercase, how to pronounce the letter, what it looks like, and words that it is used in. It's a fun hands on way for your child to learn.

4.) The Alphabet Song

"A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z, Now I know my A,B,C's, Next time won't you sing with me."

Nothing beats the classics. Your child needs to know their alphabet so sing the alphabet song with them.

5.) Technology

We live in the age of technology, so use it. It doesn't make you a bad parent to use computers, and apps to teach your child. It makes it easier for them to learn in a fun and interesting way. You shouldn't just use technology to teach them, but it doesn't hurt to use some.

Sesame Street is an amazing site to help teach your child many things. From numbers and letters, to math and pattern, and many more. Every game on this site teaches your child something they need to know in a fun and colorful way.

Disney Junior

Here are also some good learning games on disney junior, but you have to be more selective. Some of the games on this site are just that, games. So you just need to select the ones that actually teach your child something.

Leap Frog

Leap Frog has some awesome technology to help your child learn. They even have a game for the LeapPad that's called 'Get Ready For Kindergarten Learning Game Pack'. I know that some would find these products a little on the expensive side, but for those of you who don't it's a worth while purchase. Your child can use it for years to come, and it's quite durable. For Learning to read the LeapReader is perfect and they have a large selection of books that it can be used for.
